Name/Work Name: Takeshi Yamamoto / Rain
Canon: Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Canon Point: Post-manga
AU/CRAU: Nope
Age: 14
History: I realize that this only covers the events of the series but there isn't much known about Takeshi pre-series
Personality: When we first meet him, Takeshi is introduced as a very stereotypical Japanese teenager. His favorite food is sushi, his favorite sport is baseball and later on in the series his weapon of choice becomes a katana. Even his name, Yamamoto Takeshi, is about as Japanese as you can get. His character seems to be centered mostly around his optimism and easy going attitude towards most things. He is almost never seen without a smile and is very popular in school because of his ability to get along with virtually everyone and his proficiency in baseball.
However, that laid back attitude can be quite deceptive. When he's first introduced we are told that Takeshi excels at baseball and is on the starting lineup of the baseball team, an impressive feat for a first year student. But he is worried about his place on the team because lately he hasn't been improving and he's scared he'll be removed from the starting lineup if he doesn't manage to fix that. It’s here that we see just how important baseball is to Takeshi, it’s something he’s really good at and a way to connect with his peers. While Takeshi is a very sociable and extroverted boy he doesn’t seem comfortable sharing his worries with his teammates and instead turns to Sawada Tsunayoshi, a boy known as the no-good loser of the school, for advice. Takeshi admires Tsuna for the way he has been growing lately and decides it’s a good idea to ask for help from someone who is used to losing and not meeting expectations. When Tsuna isn’t able to give him any advice beyond “give it your all” he still takes it to heart and throws himself into practicing.
Unfortunately for Takeshi, he doesn't know when to stop and ends up fracturing his right arm, causing him to be unable to play baseball for the time being. Overwhelmed by the anger and frustration that comes with his injury he decides to end his life. Baseball is such an important part of his life that he honestly feels like he can’t live without it. His teammates think he is joking but while a lot of the time Takeshi is joking, he’s always sincere about his feelings. Right before he is able to jump of the roof of the school he is stopped by Tsuna. Takeshi hopes that maybe Tsuna will understand his feelings, but Tsuna reveals to him that his own emotions are not that intense and he really looks up to Takeshi for his ability to throw himself into something so completely. It’s Tsuna’s speech that eventually convinces Takeshi to not go through with suicide.
Like most characters in Katekyo Hitman Reborn! a great deal of Takeshi's personality is made up around Tsuna. After the incident on the roof, he and Tsuna become very close friends, he is roped into joining the Vongola mafia Family and, eventually, becoming one of Tsuna's Guardians by Reborn, a baby claiming to be on the of the greatest hitmen in the world. At the time he thinks it’s just a game the baby came up with and Tsuna got dragged into along with his friends. And he continues to call it “the mafia game” throughout most of the series, to the aggravation of some of the characters that do take it very seriously. Most notably Gokudera Hayato, the Storm Guardian and Tsuna’s self-appointed right hand man. Contrary to Takeshi, Gokudera is pessimistic and has an incredibly short temper, which causes their personalities to clash quite often in what, Takeshi thinks, is a friendly rivalry. However over the course of the series they spend enough time together to become actual friends and often find themselves on the same side of the battlefield to protect Tsuna.
Even though Takeshi keeps claiming their fights are a game, he has times when he takes it very seriously and it’s hard to believe he actually believes it’s a game, most often when his friends' lives are in actual danger. He treats every fight like a serious threat and focusses on his opponent completely. Despite being named Namimori Middle School’s second strongest at the beginning of the series he never underestimates the people he fights. When he is attacked by Squalo, a rival swordsman, and only barely manages to escape injury, he decides that it’s time to get serious about fighting and withdraws himself from his friends to ask his father to teach him how to wield a sword. His father, being a master swordsman himself, teaches Takeshi the Shigure Soen technique. This technique was created by a master swordsman who passed it on to his pupils, with the directive that one day they would do the same. It's common practice for each generation to add a new form to the technique, causing it to branch out into slightly different forms. However, as new forms were created, the weaker branches deteriorate, and others disappear completely when there is no one to teach them to. This ever evolving way of the sword is thus called the perfect, flawless style by Takeshi's father, since it's highly unlikely that two successors will have been taught the same forms. Takeshi's father shows the forms he has been taught to Takeshi just once, as is tradition. Takeshi then spends the next few days doing nothing but practicing and improving the Shigure Soen technique until he has mastered it. When it turns out that Squalo is also familiar with the Shigure Soen technique he makes up a new form for it in the middle of battle to catch the other of guard. This is another good example on how he always completely immerses himself into whatever task he takes on.
This attitude to fighting often earns him the respect, and occasionally even friendship, of his opponents. More than most other characters, we see Takeshi form close bonds with his previous enemies. Squalo, his first serious opponent, eventually ends up as something of a mentor, dedicating his time to making Takeshi a better fighter worth his place as Guardian of the Tenth Boss of the Vongola Family.
Another character that takes up the role of mentor to Takeshi is the earlier mentioned Reborn. Reborn seems to have more interest in Takeshi than in any of the other Guardians, claiming that Takeshi has a lot of raw talent and killer intent, making him the perfect natural born assassin.
But aside from his fighting prowess and his talents for being a hitman Takeshi still remains the cheerful, laid-back boy we meet at first. He never loses that charisma that drew people to him in the first place and continues to try to befriend everyone he meets. His role as Rain Guardian gives him the special trait of tranquility, carrying the meaning of stillness and pacification, he is definitely a calming force within the group of Guardians and has the least trouble communicating with all the vastly different personalities of his friends.
Debt: He just wants to improve his skills to be a better Guardian for Tsuna.
Suitability: As mentioned earlier, Takeshi tends to be easy going and quickly adepts to new surroundings. He won't like being away from his Family but he will try to make the best out of the situation. He's a hard worker and a real team player and will get along with almost everybody.
